Description
From muddy tidal estuary inhabited by the Yelamu, to a rail and shipping nerve center for the city, to what is now home to emerging biotech companies and San Francisco’s newest residential district, Mission Bay offers a glimpse of the future but doesn’t forget its past. See how enclosing the bay with a railroad bridge quickly led to industrious people and companies capitalizing on the area. Even the two aged but still-openable bridges play a part in the city’s and Mission Bay’s history. Eventually Mission Bay languished for decades until redevelopment plans in 1980 gave it new life. Meanwhile the stalwart houseboat community continued to improve the area near the waters that weren’t filled in during the 1800s. When neighboring Oracle Park was opened in 2000, Mission Bay found its new groove. Development isn’t over yet, with more buildings and housing planned.
