Description
In 1852 English entrepreneur George Gordon set upon creating South Park, the London-inspired planned community sitting just south of Market Street.
He envisioned an exclusive, modern neighborhood styled after a square in London, intended to be a private, secure place for the wealthy to live comfortably. It featured the first paved streets and sidewalks in the city, as well as a gate that locked at curfew.
Walk through one of George Gordon’s most personal projects and admire what’s left of the English-inspired oasis. Explore the luscious South Park, a plot of green that underwent a $2.8 million renovation in 2016. Hear about the ups and downs, the fortune and romance, and ‘Second Street Cut’ that changed everything. It’s a taste of London you can’t find anywhere else this side of the Atlantic.
