Rivet Rivet: The Birth of Blue Jeans

by Lisa Harrington

Merchant Levi Strauss could sell, and tailor Jacob Davis could sew. Working together they received the first U.S. Patent for blue jeans in 1873. The Levi Strauss & Co Archives, located at the company’s headquarters, 1155 Battery Street, records the birth of blue jeans using thousands of posters, photographs, and garments. Designers from around the world visit the collection, called The Vault, for inspiration. It’s open from 8 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 5 pm on weekends. Donations are welcome.
