Kurt Herbert Adler - San Francisco Legend

by Gail MacGowan

Kurt Herbert Adler was the autocratic general director of the San Francisco Opera. His uncompromising personality and his central role during a half century of San Francisco’s cultural history ensure his place among the City’s unforgettable great leaders.

As a member of the Opera Chorus during the now-legendary Adler years, I can testify that Adler was omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent in his kingdom at the War Memorial Opera House. Even if I was positioned in the darkest corner of the stage amidst a cast of hundreds, Mr. Adler was sure to notice if I forgot a word or tripped on my costume. “Eeet’s not POSS-eeble!” he would growl in his Viennese accent, sending terror into the hearts of all. But he could also turn his Viennese charm on tempestuous divas, millionaire patrons, and cute young chorus girls.

Maestro Adler created the great company and the passionate opera audience that enrich San Francisco to this day. Adler was hired as chorus master in 1943 by Gaetano Merola, who had founded San Francisco Opera in 1923. When ten years later Merola collapsed and died while conducting a performance at Stern Grove, Adler took over as general director and, tirelessly supervising even the smallest detail on every production, soon built SFO into a world-class opera company. Thanks to Adler, San Francisco hosted the operatic debuts of such fledgling stars as Leontyne Price, Marilyn Horne, and Jess Thomas, and the American premieres of European opera legends Boris Christoff, Birgit Nilsson, and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Mr. Adler also founded the world-renowned Merola Training Program, named for his predecessor and mentor.

I am grateful to have worked under and learned from Mr. Adler, and I salute all that he did for the art of opera – and for the City of San Francisco.
