South Park: From the Gold Rush to Instagram

Neighborhood: South of Market (SOMA)

Home > Find Your Tour > South Park: From the Gold Rush to Instagram

Description

In 1852, British entrepreneur George Gordon started building a residential development around a new park on the south side of Rincon Hill, less than a mile from Market Street.

Since then, South Park has more continuous history than any other city block in San Francisco:  From homes for the Gold Rush business class, to a post-1906-earthquake neighborhood for waves of newcomers from Japan, the Philippines, and the American South, to industry and warehousing for the West Coast’s busiest port, to the late-1990’s “dot-com” boom-and-bust, and now a tech and venture-capital hub with a revitalized park for the neighborhood’s old and new residents.

Join us for an exciting walk through time, from the Gold Rush to the first offices of Twitter and Instagram.
