The Public Life of Private Buildings: POPOS, Art & Urban Space in SOMA
Neighborhood: SOMA
Description
Prior to the 1980s, the neighborhood South of Market Street (SOMA) was a gritty waterfront warehouse district, hidden in the dark shadows of an elevated freeway. Today, SOMA has evolved into a thriving center of innovation and is home to many of the world’s most forward-thinking companies.
Striking contemporary architecture and an extensive network of Privately Owned Public Open Spaces (POPOS) showcase the art and urban design woven throughout the district. Ranging from hidden plazas and rooftop gardens to sculptural installations and welcoming interior lobbies, these spaces are intentionally integrated into the urban landscape, offering moments of calm and respite just steps away from busy city sidewalks.
We’ll walk together, behind glass facades and down lesser-known alleyways to explore some of SOMA’s most intriguing public spaces. Along the way, you’ll discover how POPOS and public art have helped transform the neighborhood into a vibrant and welcoming place to work, live, and explore.
